SGTech & SBF Cybersecurity 101 Series - Fundamentals of Cybersecurity

With more companies leveraging digitalisation to scale up and enable employees to work from anywhere, sensitive data moves from physical to online and beyond the protection of an organisation’s traditional controls.

The "Fundamentals of Cybersecurity" webinar was held on 3 Feb 2021, jointly organised by Singapore Business Federation (SBF) and SGTech.  Mr Freddy Wee, Partner at PwC and Co-opted member of SGTech's Cyber Security Chapter Exco was the main speaker. SBF Digitalisation Committee Chairman, and Immediate Past President of SGTech, Mr Saw Ken Wye, welcomed the participants.

Mr Saw welcomed the participants to the Fundamentals of Cybersecurity webinar.

Mr Freddy Wee started with a case study of a phishing attack. Once a company user opened the file attached with an email, the malware used a vulnerability in a software application, took control of the employee's laptop, and enabled the hacker to gain access to other employees with access to sensitive data.

Mr Freddy Wee shared about best practices to preventing cyber threats for organisations.

Mr Wee also spoke about ransomware, using a fake but similar and recognisable email address to impersonate a known person, gives the attacker access to the corporate network and data. Once taken over by the hacker, the organisation would lose access to the data, and the hacker would demand payment to recover the data and access. The following diagram illustrates the anatomy of a ransomware attack.

Participants also learnt about the following essential cybersecurity tips for securing small businesses:
1. Keep your software up-to-date
2. Use two-factor or multi-factor authentication
3. Learn about phishing scams – be very suspicious of emails, phone calls, and flyers
4. Protect your sensitive personal identifiable information
5. Use your mobile devices securely
6. Review your online accounts & credit reports regularly for changes
7. Use anti-virus protection & rirewall
Mr Wee addressed questions from the audience in the final Q&A segment.
