SGTech Holds its First Hybrid Annual General Meeting

Representatives from SGTech member companies attended SGTech's Annual General Meeting

On 17 September 2021, SGTech held our 40th Annual General Meeting (AGM), in a hybrid format for the first time.

The AGM was attended by 54 representatives from member companies, with 21 representatives attending in person at the SGTech office.

During FY20/21, SGTech navigated a full financial year under the influence of COVID-19 and had to transform to bolster against the uncertainties brought about by the pandemic. We were able to do so thanks to the support of our members and the leadership of the Council and Excos of our Chapters and Committees, and we look forward to achieve many more milestones on the road ahead.

Looking ahead to FY2021/22 and beyond

Leading the proceedings at the AGM were (L-R) Mr Gavin Chua, Honorary Treasurer and Sustainability Committee Co-Chair, Mr Wong Wai Meng, Chairman and Ms Tammie Tham, Honorary Secretary

Three-Year Strategic Focus

Presenting the Chairman’s Report, Mr Wong Wai Meng emphasised that the association’s main focus remains as advocating for our members. To do so, the SGTech Council has laid out a strategy for SGTech to look beyond digital tech and serve the wider tech community. This Three-Year Plan is the result of an intensive three-month process which was kicked off at this year’s Council Retreat, involving our Councillors, and Chapter and Committee leaders. The plan was endorsed by the Board of Governors.

SGTech will transform to ensure that we are future-ready and relevant to our members and wider community.

Leading our strategy are two strategic thrusts.

1st Strategic Thrust: Global node for digital and data

Firstly, we want to position Singapore as a global node for digital and data, built on trust. We have launched the Digital Trust Committee, at an event witnessed by DPM Heng Swee Keat, to spearhead ground-up initiatives that will position Singapore and the region as global leaders in digital trust.

2nd Strategic Thrust: Sustainability

Secondly, the tech sector must take collective action and be part of the solution to Singapore and global sustainability. Some of the themes that the Sustainability Committee will look into and champion include e-waste, packaging and the circular economy, green buildings, and green IT standards.

Talent for Tech

We will continue to champion talent for the IT sector, the foundation for these two strategic thrusts. SGTech is representing the sector in a Ministerial taskforce chaired by Minister Chan Chun Sing to help strengthen career outcomes for our Polytechnic and ITE graduates. As part of the work by this taskforce, SGTech will also co-chair the industry workgroup with IMDA to formulate meaningful policies and programmes in support of this cause.

2022: 40 Years of Representing Singapore’s Tech Industry

Next year, to celebrate our 40th anniversary, we will publish a Special Digital Edition of "Intelligent Island: The Untold Story of Singapore's Tech Journey".

Also, we want to reconnect with the numerous individuals who have served in the leadership on our Council, Chapters and Committees over these 40 years, to express our gratitude for and celebrate these giants, whose contributions have taken us to where we are today.

Financial Report

The Chairman’s report was followed by a report on our finance from FY2020/2021, presented by SGTech’s Honorary Treasurer Mr Gavin Chua.
As a result of the cancellation of physical events such as SITEX, Flagship events (e.g. Tech Industry Gala), and overseas trade missions due to COVID-19, our finances were severely impacted this year. The silver lining that mitigated the revenue loss and reduced the deficit during the year were:
  1. Government grants
  2. Delivering more value to members and increasing membership income
  3. Effective initiatives by the Chapters which resulted in higher income from chapters
