SGTech organises CloudAsia 2019

After a successful CloudAsia conference in 2018 - the first time SGTech’s Cloud & Data Chapter organised the two-day conference after taking over the baton from IMDA - we presented the 2019 edition on 9 and 10 October 2019.

Similar to 2018, this year’s CloudAsia conference was co-located with Cloud Expo Asia.

This year, the conference deep-dived into how cloud and digital technologies support the advancement of innovation and digitisation, and also discussed trends in data privacy.

In Mr Heah’s opening keynote, he commended SGTech for its work in helming CloudAsia and building the Cloud ecosystem here in Singapore. He also highlighted the importance for businesses to move to the Cloud, and beyond that, be Cloud Native. To this, Mr Heah highlighted programmes and initiatives by IMDA such as GoCloud as well as SMEs Go Digital to support businesses in this journey, expressing confidence that the upcoming Cloud Appreciation series by SGTech will complement IMDA’s efforts.

There was also a fireside chat to discuss the best practices in cloud adoption. The audience learned that today, many Asian companies are still operating using on-premise solutions instead of cloud-based solutions. This is due to three key reasons:
  1. Security concerns over data residing in the cloud
  2. Lack of management buy-in to migrate to the cloud
  3. Shortage of talent and skills to fully harness the benefits of cloud
These issues have to be addressed collectively by the industry and users for cloud adoption to accelerate further.
